YouTube Says Sign In to Confirm You're Not a Bot

When YouTube shows Sign in to confirm you're not a bot, it is an IP-reputation gate. Sign in first, then test VPN, Private Relay, and embeds.

Quick answer

YouTube is asking you to prove the session is a signed-in person, usually because the IP looks shared (VPN, Private Relay, CGNAT, school or work proxy). Sign in on youtube.com in a normal window first. If you already are signed in, turn the VPN or Private Relay off, compare Wi-Fi with a phone hotspot, and open the watch URL on youtube.com instead of an embed. This is not a broken player, and it is not a reason to use unofficial YouTube front ends.

What we're seeing

  • The player sentence is Sign in to confirm you're not a bot, often with This helps protect our community. A Learn more link on that screen does not open a Help Center article that quotes the sentence.
  • YouTube Help's generic playback article still does not name this prompt. Community-confirmed leftover steps come from independent 2025–2026 threads, not from a YouTube known-issue page.
  • A Cisco Secure Access note still matches the mechanism: Google is not blocking YouTube. It prompts sign-in because the request comes from a pool of shared IPs. Sign-in may not clear embedded players.
  • People already signed in still hit the prompt on embeds, private windows, Brave Shields, VPNs, and iCloud Private Relay. Signing in is the intended first step, not the only leftover test.
  • Do not treat this as a downloader, ad-block, or alternate-frontend problem. Those workarounds are out of scope and are not a fix for the youtube.com player.

Fix 1

Confirm the bot prompt

Community Confirmed

Match the player sentence before changing networks or clearing anything. A different YouTube sign-in wall, a Continue watching? prompt, or a plain This content isn't available screen is a different problem.

  1. Read the player. This guide is for Sign in to confirm you're not a bot or Sign in to confirm that you're not a bot, often with This helps protect our community.
  2. Note whether it appears on youtube.com, in an embedded player (Discord, slides, an event site), or only in a private window.
  3. Note whether you are already signed in to Google in that same browser profile. Already signed in is still this fingerprint.

Applies to Web, iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac, Desktop, Mobile

Fix 2

Sign in on youtube.com

Community Confirmed

This prompt is YouTube's intended anti-abuse gate, not a crash. Independent reports and a Cisco employee note agree: Google wants a signed-in session when the IP looks shared. Use youtube.com itself. Signing in may not repair an embed that cannot inherit that session.

  1. Open https://www.youtube.com/ in a normal browser window, not a private or guest window.
  2. Sign in with the Google account you actually use for YouTube, then open the same video from the YouTube search box or your history.
  3. If the video plays on youtube.com after sign-in, stop. The remaining steps are only for a prompt that continues while you are already signed in, or for an embed that still blocks.

Applies to Web, iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac, Desktop, Mobile

Fix 3

Leave private windows and site embeds

Community Confirmed

Private windows, guest profiles, and some embedded players do not keep a YouTube login. HeySummit's July 2026 help article for this exact sentence tells attendees to sign in, use a normal window, and open the video on YouTube. Brave users reported the same embed prompt while already signed in.

  1. Close Incognito, Private, or guest windows. Retry in your everyday signed-in Chrome, Edge, Safari, or Firefox profile.
  2. If the prompt is on Discord, a slide deck, or an event page, copy the video ID or use Watch on YouTube / Open in YouTube and play it on youtube.com.
  3. Do not treat a working youtube.com tab as proof the embed is repaired. Embedded players often do not inherit that login.

Applies to Web, Desktop, Windows, Mac

Fix 4

Change the IP YouTube sees

Community Confirmed

When sign-in is not enough, the leftover cause in 2025–2026 threads is the egress IP: VPN, iCloud Private Relay, Safari Hide IP, CGNAT, or a school/work secure web gateway. A phone hotspot is the clean A/B test. If the hotspot plays the video and Wi-Fi does not, stay on the network path instead of reinstalling YouTube.

  1. Turn the VPN off, or switch to a different VPN server, then reload youtube.com. Several reports cleared only after the VPN dropped.
  2. On iPhone or Mac, turn off iCloud Private Relay (Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Private Relay) and, in Safari, turn off Hide IP Address / Limit IP Address Tracking for this test. Turn them back on later if you want.
  3. Compare the same signed-in account on the usual Wi-Fi and on a phone hotspot. If only the hotspot works, YouTube is scoring the home, school, or office IP, not your password.
  4. On a work Secure Web Gateway, sign-in on youtube.com is the first vendor-listed step. Asking IT to bypass youtube.com and googlevideo.com is a later IT change, and customers in that Cisco thread often said it still failed.

Applies to Web, iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac, Desktop, Mobile

Fix 5

Pause site shields that break the player session

Community Confirmed

Brave community reports from December 2025 and January 2026 showed embedded YouTube asking for this sign-in while Shields were up, even though the user was already signed in. Turning Shields down for that site let the embed play. This is a site exception, not a reason to disable the browser's protections everywhere.

  1. If you use Brave, turn Shields down for the site that embeds the video, or for youtube.com, then reload. Leave Shields on elsewhere.
  2. Pause other privacy extensions on youtube.com for one test (tracker blockers that rewrite the player). If nothing changes, turn them back on.
  3. If you already cleared cookies in a loop and the prompt returns only on one browser, try a second everyday browser before wiping the profile.

Applies to Web, Windows, Mac, Desktop

Match the bot prompt

This guide is for the YouTube player that says **Sign in to confirm you're not a bot** or **Sign in to confirm that you're not a bot**, often with **This helps protect our community**.

It is YouTube's anti-abuse gate, not a crashed player and not a global outage. Independent 2025–2026 reports, plus a Cisco employee note on Secure Access, describe the same mechanism: the request comes from a shared or flagged IP (VPN, Private Relay, CGNAT, school or work proxy), so YouTube wants a signed-in session.

YouTube's generic playback help still does not quote this sentence. Treat this page as **Community Confirmed**.

A different wall (**Continue watching?**, a plain **This content isn't available**, or a password prompt inside Google Account recovery) is not this fingerprint.

Sign in on youtube.com first

Open [youtube.com](https://www.youtube.com/) in a normal window. Sign in, then play the same video from YouTube itself.

That is the intended first fix. Several threads clear there. If the video plays, stop.

If you were **already signed in** and the prompt remains, or if only an embed is blocked, keep going. Signing in does not always travel into Discord, slides, event pages, or a private window.

Leave private windows, then open embeds on YouTube

Use your everyday browser profile. Close Incognito, Private, and guest windows.

If the prompt is inside another site, use **Watch on YouTube** or open the watch URL on youtube.com. HeySummit's July 2026 article for this exact sentence tells attendees to sign in, use a normal window, and play the video on YouTube. Brave users reported the same embed prompt while already signed in.

A working youtube.com tab does not prove the embed is fixed. Embedded players often cannot see that login.

Change the IP YouTube sees

When sign-in is not enough, leftover reports cluster on the egress IP.

1. Turn the VPN off, or switch servers, and reload. 2. On iPhone or Mac, turn **iCloud Private Relay** off for the test. In Safari, turn off **Hide IP Address** / **Limit IP Address Tracking**. Turn them back on afterward if you want. 3. Play the same signed-in account on Wi-Fi and on a phone hotspot. If only the hotspot works, YouTube is scoring the network, not your password.

Work Secure Web Gateway users are in the same bucket. Cisco's note still says Google is prompting login from a pool of shared IPs, not blocking YouTube. Their listed bypass of `youtube.com` and `googlevideo.com` is an IT change, and customers in that thread often said it still failed. Do not paste proxy exceptions into a machine you do not administer.

Pause site shields, not the whole browser

On Brave, turn Shields down for the embedding site or for youtube.com, then reload. Leave Shields on everywhere else.

If a tracker blocker rewrites the YouTube player, pause it on youtube.com for one test. If nothing changes, turn it back on.

Clearing youtube.com cookies can help a **loop while already signed in**. It is not the first step, and it will sign you out of YouTube in that browser.

What not to do

Skip these as first moves:

  • Reinstalling the YouTube app or switching Google passwords when a hotspot already plays the video.
  • Unofficial YouTube front ends, client spoofs, or filter lists. They are out of scope and they do not repair the youtube.com player.
  • Assuming an ad blocker is the cause without an A/B test. Some privacy tools do break the session (Brave Shields is one documented leftover). Many do not.
  • Treating a finished YouTube outage as this prompt. This screen stays after the network looks "up."

This is not a billing, copyright-strike, or account-deletion problem. Stay on session and network checks.

Verify the result

You are done when:

  • The same video plays on youtube.com in a normal signed-in window without **Sign in to confirm you're not a bot**.
  • If the original hit was an embed, the watch URL plays on youtube.com. The embed may still prompt; that can be expected.
  • A hotspot-vs-Wi-Fi split is recorded if you needed it, so you do not keep reinstalling.

If a school, ISP, or Secure Web Gateway IP stays flagged after sign-in, you have a leftover IP reputation problem, not a broken YouTube install. Collect the exact sentence, browser, whether you were already signed in, VPN/Relay state, and whether a hotspot worked, then take that to the network admin. Do not send passwords.

Device notes

Web
The prompt is most common in the browser player and in embeds. youtube.com in a normal signed-in window is the intended path. Private windows and Discord or event-page embeds often will not inherit that login.
iPhone
Test iCloud Private Relay and Safari Hide IP Address / Limit IP Address Tracking off, then a cellular hotspot versus Wi-Fi. The YouTube app can still hit a shared-IP prompt on VPN.
Android
Compare Wi-Fi with mobile data on the same Google account. A work or school Wi-Fi prompt that vanishes on mobile data is the IP, not a broken app install.
Mac
Safari Hide IP Address and iCloud Private Relay are the first Mac-specific leftover, before any profile reset.
Windows
A corporate Secure Web Gateway can keep showing the prompt after a successful youtube.com login, especially inside embeds.
Desktop
Use a normal desktop browser profile, not a guest session. Signing in on youtube.com does not automatically repair an in-app WebView embed.
Mobile
A hotspot test is the fastest way to prove a CGNAT, VPN, or campus IP problem without deleting the app.

Official information

Checked on 31 August 2026, YouTube's generic playback help still does not quote Sign in to confirm you're not a bot. A Cisco Secure Access note updated through late 2025 still describes the same prompt as a shared-IP login request, not a YouTube outage, and says signing in may not work for embedded videos. HeySummit published attendee steps for this exact sentence on 25 July 2026: sign in, open the video on YouTube, use a normal window, try another network, and clear YouTube cookies if the prompt loops.
