Quick answer

Match QuickBooks Desktop Premier, Enterprise, or Contractor 2024 Enhanced Payroll when Employees → Pay Employees opens the Qualified Overtime, FLSA, or No Tax on Overtime setup wizard after a payroll update, then crashes when you answer Yes or No so payroll cannot finish. Switch to Single-user Mode, open Help → Update QuickBooks Desktop → Update Now, check Reset Update, Get Updates, fully quit, relaunch QuickBooks as administrator, then open Pay Employees and finish the overtime setup. If multi-user still crashes, run that payroll pass in Single-user Mode. This is not a generic Connection has been lost error.

What we're seeing

  • The fingerprint is the overtime or No Tax on Overtime setup wizard that appears when starting Pay Employees after a payroll update, then QuickBooks crashes when you answer Yes or No.
  • Independent December 2025 first-hand r/QuickBooks and Intuit Community threads quote that wizard-plus-crash path on Desktop 2024 Enhanced Payroll and Enterprise.
  • First-hand leftovers that cleared the crash include File → Switch to Single-user Mode, then Help → Update QuickBooks Desktop → Update Now with Reset Update checked, a full quit, and Run as administrator before finishing the overtime setup.
  • Some first-hand reporters could complete payroll in Single-user Mode while multi-user still crashed, which is an interim leftover not a permanent multi-user fix by itself.
  • A later Intuit critical patch is additive. The Reset Update leftover was independently confirmed before treating wait-for-patch as the path.

Fix 1

Confirm the overtime wizard crash

Community Confirmed

Match the Pay Employees overtime setup wizard crash before resetting updates.

  1. Open Employees → Pay Employees or unscheduled payroll after a recent payroll update.
  2. Confirm QuickBooks shows the Qualified Overtime, FLSA, or No Tax on Overtime setup wizard, then crashes when you choose Yes or No.
  3. If you only see Connection has been lost or an entitlement abort with no overtime wizard, stop here. That is a different fingerprint.

Fix 2

Single-user Mode and Reset Update

Community Confirmed

December 2025 first-hand Intuit Community and r/QuickBooks reports cleared the overtime wizard crash after Single-user Mode plus Reset Update, then finishing the overtime setup as administrator.

  1. Open File → Switch to Single-user Mode.
  2. Open Help → Update QuickBooks Desktop → Update Now.
  3. Check Reset Update, then choose Get Updates and let the download finish.
  4. Fully quit QuickBooks so no leftover process remains.
  5. Right-click the QuickBooks shortcut → Run as administrator.
  6. Open Employees → Pay Employees, complete the overtime setup screens, and choose Finish.
  7. Confirm payroll can continue without the crash.

Fix 3

Run payroll in Single-user Mode if multi-user still crashes

Community Confirmed

First-hand peers who still crashed in multi-user could finish the same payroll run after staying in Single-user Mode.

  1. If the overtime setup still crashes for other users on the network, keep File → Switch to Single-user Mode for that payroll pass.
  2. Complete Pay Employees in Single-user Mode, then return to multi-user only after the company file is stable.

Official information

Checked on 17 September 2026, first-hand r/QuickBooks and Intuit Community threads document the overtime or No Tax on Overtime wizard crash after a payroll update and clear it with Single-user Mode plus Reset Update before finishing the setup as administrator. Intuit later shipped related payroll fixes, but the try-today leftover remains the Reset Update path confirmed by peers.
