Slack Desktop Opens With No Window on Windows

When Slack Desktop on Windows shows no window while Task Manager lists about three Slack processes, end those tasks and launch the newest app-* slack.exe, then recreate your pin.

Quick answer

Match Slack Desktop on Windows when the shortcut or pin does nothing useful, no Slack window appears, and Task Manager shows about three Slack processes in the background. End every Slack task, open the newest %LocalAppData%\slack\app-*\slack.exe directly, then recreate the Start menu or taskbar pin to that build. If a brand-new app-* folder is corrupt, remove only that newest broken folder and launch the previous build. You can also open the workspace from the browser with Open in Slack. Microsoft Store repair or a clean reinstall is the later leftover. This is not a workspace login loop inside a visible Slack window.

What we're seeing

  • The fingerprint is Slack Desktop on Windows with no visible window while Slack processes stay running in the background.
  • Independent November 2025 through April 2026 first-hand Reddit threads describe the same headless state, including about three Slack tasks and pins that point at an old or broken app-* build.
  • First-hand leftovers include ending all Slack tasks, launching the newest LocalAppData slack app-* slack.exe, deleting only a corrupt newest update folder, and repairing or reinstalling from Microsoft Store or slack.com.
  • Browser Open in Slack can force a desktop handoff when the pinned shortcut is dead.
  • Clearing %AppData%\Roaming\Slack is a last resort after process and app-* leftovers, not the first step.

Fix 1

Confirm the no-window fingerprint

Community Confirmed

Match the headless Windows Desktop state before deleting Slack folders.

  1. Click the Slack shortcut or pin and confirm no Slack window appears.
  2. Open Task Manager and look for multiple Slack background processes, often about three.
  3. If Slack opens a visible window and only fails to sign in, stop here. That is a different fingerprint.

Fix 2

End Slack tasks and launch newest app-*

Community Confirmed

First-hand reports cleared the headless state by killing every Slack process, then starting the newest %LocalAppData%\slack\app-*\slack.exe and recreating the pin to that build.

  1. In Task Manager, End task on every Slack process.
  2. Open File Explorer to %LocalAppData%\slack\ and identify the newest app-* folder.
  3. Run slack.exe inside that newest folder once.
  4. If the window appears, unpin the old shortcut and pin this slack.exe (or recreate the Start menu shortcut) so launches hit the working build.

Fix 3

Remove only a corrupt newest app-* folder

Community Confirmed

First-hand 2026 reports recovered when the newest update folder under LocalAppData\slack was deleted and the previous app-* build was launched instead.

  1. Fully end all Slack processes again.
  2. If the newest app-* folder will not start, move or delete only that newest folder. Leave older app-* builds in place.
  3. Launch slack.exe from the previous app-* folder and recreate your pin to it.

Applies to Windows, Desktop

Fix 4

Open the workspace from the browser

Community Confirmed

First-hand threads use browser Open in Slack as a handoff when the desktop pin is dead but the install still responds to protocol launch.

  1. Sign into the same workspace at slack.com in a browser.
  2. Use Open in Slack if the site offers it, then confirm a desktop window appears.

Applies to Windows, Desktop

Fix 5

Repair or reinstall Slack

Community Confirmed

When app-* leftovers fail, first-hand reports use Microsoft Store repair or reinstall, or a fresh download from slack.com, before wiping Roaming state.

  1. If you installed from Microsoft Store, open Apps → Slack → Advanced options → Repair, then relaunch.
  2. If Repair fails, reinstall from Microsoft Store or download a fresh installer from slack.com.
  3. Only if it is still headless, fully quit Slack and rename %AppData%\Roaming\Slack to Slack.bak, then relaunch so Slack can recreate local state.

Device notes

Windows
This fingerprint is Windows Desktop with LocalAppData\slack\app-* builds.
Mac
Not the validated first-hand cluster for this no-window leftover.
Desktop
Keep the leftover on process kill plus app-* pin repair before Roaming deletes.

Official information
